Review:
Youth Novels is an album I have to say is an absolute classic. One of those albums which ignites a spark inside of you and triggers old memories and feelings which really connect you to the music and your surroundings. Lykke Li's music is something that reminds me of little sentimental things: slightly faded Polaroid photographs, old train tickets, warm summer evenings and cold autumn ones. The point that really stands out to me, and I guess the one which I am trying to make is that Youth Novels has this lovely personal touch which Lykke really portrays and reflects in her music. Her music is a blend of sounds and tones which create an amazing atmosphere I have never really heard in an album before.
Songs such as 'Dance, Dance, Dance', 'Little Bit', and 'Breaking It Up' are sure to be instant favourites, but the more you listen, the more you fall in love with each and every single track. Sampled sounds, rhythms, vocals, and song structures are placed so carefully yet feel so effortless. This album just works, purely and completely truthfully. If you haven't listen to Lykke Li yet, you need to, plain and simple. As for comparing her to other artists I don't think it is even possible. Her music is one of a kind. Her vocal qualities vary from song to song, but Lykee has produced some of the most interesting and perfectly fitting vocals that make Youth Novels what it is.
With 14 different tracks this album is something everyone should listen to at least once, as there is sure to be at least one track which strikes up everyones interest. Most songs are more laid back and experimental, but are contrasted with some that are more upbeat and toe tappingly catchy.
Whilst some people might not find Youth Novels to their taste, the ones that do will most definitely hold it close to their hearts.
