The Shipman Project – MySpace Songs

Farmer's Wife
My favourite thing about Farmer's Wife has to be the impressive growling. The intro, which was executed with style, also gets your attention very quickly. It's definitely a headbanging song and if you like your metal heavy The Shipman Project's kind of music is for you. It's easy to get swept away in all the power The Shipman Project has to offer. Like a car that suddenly breaks down though Farmer's Wife does not finish the journey it began. In all its power the song loses itself. It's as if the band forgot in all their trying to be powerful that they have A, Talent and B, A story to tell. Basically Farmer's Wife is not my favourite Shipman Project track, but, by no means bottom of the list. While it might not win any new fans it will please fans of death metal looking for something new and enjoyable.

Torr's Crimson Abyss
Torr's Crimson Abyss is my favourite Shipman Project track winning by a country mile. Different to Farmer's Wife but equal in vigour it was love at first chord. The power in the bands individual parts and melody play off each other really well adding an uplifting punch to a rather sad song. That is to say a song with a sad story. I like that fact too that Torr's Crimson Abyss is a step away from the bands other songs and demonstrates versatility in their writing. There's something very Cradle of Filth about The Shipman Project and it's good to see them developing their own style. There's a fine line between a new band sounding right and sounding like everyone else. With time, and more songs like this, The Shipman Project could easily establish themselves as a successful band in their own right.

Cradle, Pablo
Cradle and Pablo are both strong songs but lack that certain something to write home about. They are good examples of heavy metal just not the greatest example of The Shipman Project's work. Again, however, I have to give credit where it's due for the passion put into Niall the lead singer's incredible vocal. It would have great to see the lyrics to these two songs. A deeper understanding of their stories might have changed this and kick started my enthusiasm.

Once Void
Once Void is, again, an excellent example of the band's flare. Although it sounded like Avenged's 'A little bit of heaven' at points. No, even I can't explain that, but they carried it off with distinction. Once Void has an eerie mysterious quality lent to it by the steady time signature but still manages to be fast. It was funky yet creepy and I really would recommend it. It was a struggle to find anything dislikeable about Once Void or to find fault with The Shipman Project's hard work in general as a matter of fact. Although some of their songs were less quick to impress they are arguably the same calibre as many signed and much loved metal bands. The immense power behind Niall's voice has been mentioned but the speed they play with makes you want to say 'We're not worthy!' because calling The Shipman Project's songs complex would be an understatement. I want to hear more from these guys.
