Arriving late to a gig is something I hate doing for many reasons. I feel every artists set should be heard from start to finish in order to get the complete experience on what an artist, an event, and a venue has to offer. What I didn't expect on this Saturday was to walk in and find a virtually empty room, especially with a headliner such as Lostalone. Even local band Offlimit had only managed to pull a handful of people, most of which left shortly after their set had finished.
Unfairly I only managed to catch half of Offlimit's set, which would be the reason why I don't have a large amount to write about them. Even though this is the case, I'm still not overly impressed with their sound. They certainly are musically talented, but I'm not a great fan of the music they produce. This was my second time watching the Crowborough based rock group, and it made me realise how my opinions haven't really changed that much since seeing them 2 or 3 years ago. However criticism over, they do seem to have a fairly loyal fan base, which must be there for a reason. Other than my limited opinion so far I can't really say much else about their set.
Serpico, the second support on were a band I'd never even heard of before, let alone experienced live. What they lacked in their music they made up for in their stage presence, and although all of the crowd had now disappeared that didn't seem to phase them at all. Although I can't say Serpico's sound was very appealing to me, it certainly wasn't bad. It just needed a certain something extra to bring their songs out of the dark corner it felt like they had been pushed too far into. Musically their songs were very interesting. Powerful, well timed and played precisely. Vocally however something didn't quite work and almost seemed detached and isolated from the songs themselves. Apart from this Serpico performed very well to a non existent crowd and would be a welcome change to some of the more boring and run of the mill local bands that are so frequently overplayed at The Forum.
Lostalone played a superb set even though the crowd now only consisted of myself, the other bands, and a few other people. You certainly wouldn't be fooling in thinking you were at the Astoria or another London venue. Lostalone sounded exceptional from the first chord to the last drum beat, and really made you forget where you were and who you were with. It made me quite mad that on a Saturday night no one was down the forum watching such an awesome band on their very own doorstep. From start to finish their sound was powerful and original, and one of the few sets I've seen at the forum that didn't leave me looking at my watching wondering when it would end. I can't really offer any constructive criticism on Lostalone because there's no criticism to be made. An amazing band, in a small venue, that so many people missed out on.
